Volunteer Jobs Defined

KID PUSHER

What you do: Help swimmers get to the correct waiting area before their event. You will use the heat sheet to know which swimmers need to be ready and will line them up in the correct order for their event. You are essentially making sure swimmers are where they need to be, when they need to be there.

Volunteers needed: 2 for all home and away meets. (4 if splitting the meet)

CLERK OF COURSE
What you do: Once swimmers are lined up, you help get them to the correct starting block/lane for their event using a heat sheet.

Think of this as: The person who gets swimmers from the waiting area to the starting blocks.

Volunteers needed: 1 for all home and away meets.

PLACE JUDGE
What you do: Record the swimmers' official place finishes on the event slip.

Example: Lane 1 - 2nd Place   Lane 2 - 5th place  Lane 4 - 1st place

Think of this as: Recording the results of each race on the official paperwork.

Volunteers needed: 1 for home and away meets.

TEAM TIMERS
What you do: Stand at the finishing side of the pool with a timer button and record the time for swimmers from your team. Press the button when the swimmer in your assigned lane touches the wall (crosses under the rope for 6 and under).

Volunteers needed: 6 for all home and away meets.

Good to know: You do not need to be a swimming expert—you are simply watching the assigned lane and operating a timer button.

RUNNERS
What you do: Collect paperwork from the stroke and turn judges and deliver it to the admin table. You will move around the pool during the meet, making sure paperwork gets where it needs to go.

Think of this as: The meet's paperwork delivery person.

Volunteers needed: 1 for all home and away meets.

SCORERS
What you do: Record race results, including place finishes and disqualifications, on the computer. You will run the Meet Maestro database.

Think of this as: Entering the results from each race onto the computer so team scores can be calculated.

Volunteers needed: 1 for all home and away meets.

HEAT RIBBONS
What you do: Hand out ribbons to swimmers who win their heat or receive a participation ribbon. You will distribute ribbons to swimmers who are not swimming in the main events.

Think of this as: Handing swimmers their heat ribbons after their races. The first race of each stroke/age group is the main event. The second group of swimmers that are the same age/gender are swimming in a heat.

Volunteers needed: 1 for home meets only.

STROKE AND TURN JUDGE
What you do: Watch swimmers during their races and determine whether they are following the rules for their stroke, turns, and finishes. If a swimmer does not perform an aspect of the stroke correctly, the judge may report a disqualification.

Training required: This position requires completion of an online training class before serving.

Volunteers needed: 1 for all home and away meets.

Good to know: This is an official meet position and requires training. You do not need to be an experienced official before taking the training.

TSA REPRESENTATIVE
What you do: Represent our swim club with the TSA (Tarheel Swimming Association). The representative attends TSA meetings, helps address questions or issues that come up between teams, and serves as the TSA representative at dual meets.

The TSA Representative also helps coordinate the officials' meeting before dual meets.

Good to know: Most of this responsibility happens before and after the meet, rather than during the actual races.

Volunteers needed: 1 for all home and away meets.

CONCESSIONS
What you do: Help purchase, set up, operate, and clean up the concession stand. You may prepare and sell items such as hot dogs, nachos, drinks, and candy.

Good to know: Any personal funds used towards concessions will be reimbursed.

Think of this as: Running the snack stand during the meet.

Volunteers needed: 3 for home meets only.
